The Law of the Sea

Arturo M. Tolentino: I wish people will remember me for The Law of the Sea

Libingan ng mga Bayani (Cemetery of the Heroes)

It was the Will of my father to be buried in Loyala which he prepared for his final resting place. He had a humble beginning and had always avoided grand celebrations and occasions. If any of the readers of his website happened to know my father when he was still alive, you will understand what I am saying now. He was very private when he was alive and he wanted to be that way as well when he finally leaves this planet. He had chosen a final resting place where all his love ones can easily come to his grave, it may not be grand as in the Libingan, but it was his Will. Although I still remember him saying to me more than once, that when he entered politics his life was no longer private and that we have to learn how to share him with the country.

He did what he could do for his country and I know that he has only one regret – that the dream he and his friend Wenceslao Vinzons, co-founder of the Young Philippines party during the pre-war years, was not realized within his lifetime. He carried that dream alone within him for half a century after Wenceslao Vinzons was killed during the WW2.

I do not mean to be ungrateful to the government of the Philippines, because he was given the highest honor bestowed to the greatest of all Filipino men and women. That’s why my oldest brother, Arturo D. Tolentino, Jr. and I kept quiet when we saw that we had no control over the flow of events.

To be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Cemetery of the Heroes), true it’s a big honor and something my father did not even foresee. I lost my father August 2nd, and two months later, I also lost my only brother Arturo D. Tolentino, Jr. October 10th that year.

The Republic Memorial Cemetery at Fort Mckinley was established in May 1947 as a fitting tribute to the gallant Filipino men and women who brought honor to the country and fought for the sake of freedom and democracy. It was renamed Libingan ng mga Bayani by President Ramon Magsaysay, October 27, 1954.
