The Law of the Sea

Arturo M. Tolentino: I wish people will remember me for The Law of the Sea

Nanang and Arturo Tolentino III

Arturo Tolentino’s joy of victory in this year’s election – he was top-notcher in the Senatorial race, was tampered somewhat by the tragic loss he had suffered; little more than a week earlier his mother Escolastica, died.

Nanang’s death was not unexpected. On the contrary, it had been anticipated for sometime. For two months she laid in a coma following a severe stroke.

As the eldest child the responsibility of organizing his mother’s funeral fell on my father’s shoulders. That was, as it should be for they had been very close to one another and that the preparations helped fill the empty void in which he now found himself.

There were many cars in the funeral cortege. The second car in the procession immediately behind the hearse and the coffin was a black car, empty except for the driver……and Nanang’s wheelchair. Behind her, in alphabetical order were her children and many grandchildren. 1969
